Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

The best place to start is to come into our office during Walk-in advising hours or schedule an advising appointment and talk to someone in the Global Education Office.

This approach is typically not advised. However, depending on the competitiveness of your first program choice, we may allow you to open additional applications.

Faculty-Led programs will set their own individual deadlines.

All other programs adhere to this schedule:

  • Fall & Summer: Feb. 15
  • Spring & Winter: Sept. 15

Academic Credit & Transfer

Absolutely! A number of study abroad programs have been pre-approved to satisfy Pathways requirements.

For example:
Pathways to Florence, Pathways to Steger

Ask your peer advisor for other options if these are not what you are looking for.

Credits will only transfer back to Virginia Tech if you meet all of these requirements:

  1. Register your program with the GEO before departure and complete your application requirements.
  2. Receive a transcript from an accredited university.
  3. Have your courses approved by using the Global Credit Approval Form.

This form must be completed before you leave to go abroad. You cannot use this form to get retroactive approval after you leave and begin classes abroad.

Students are responsible for ordering an official transcript from the university or entity with which they studied abroad. Students must have the transcripts sent directly to the Global Education Office. Our office cannot accept transcripts from students directly.

Payment & Finances

Yes! The Global Education Office awards approximately $500,000 of scholarships every year to help students study abroad. Please visit our Financial Matters page for more info on scholarships and grants.

It depends on the type of program that you are participating in. Housing is typically included in faculty-led programs and provider programs. Please carefully read the program information as each program differs. Reach out to vtabroad@vt.edu if you have trouble locating this information or have specific questions about housing.

Most often, this error is due to the length of the program name. The system requires the program name to be fewer than 30 characters. Please abbreviate it as short as possible and try again.

Preparing to Travel

No, the global education office does not advise on the visa process. However, students going abroad with a provider will frequently receive assistance from their staff on the visa process.

Yes, when traveling for study abroad, students are required to be covered by the university's international insurance plan or a comparable policy. For questions regarding Virginia Tech's international insurance requirement, email vtglobalsafety@vt.edu
