 Visit Dubai: Explore its  fascinating architecture,  learn about its old history  and live its vibrant modern  life.

 Earn six or nine credits  towards the Arabic minor.

 Practice what you learn by  conversing on a daily basis  with Omani Language  partners.

 Explore the magical life of  the Bedouins in Wahiba  Sands and Wadi Shab and  the splendid Ocean life in  Ras El-Zinj and the  wonders of the natural  reserves.

 Expand your cultural  understanding of the  Middle East History, Art  and culture.

Virginia Tech Arabic - Oman

Come spend your summer in the beautiful coastal city of Muscat as you study Arabic. Students will study at the Center of International Learning (CIL), taking 20 hours of intensive Arabic language each week. CIL is a highly recognized international higher institution. It began nearly ten years ago as part of World Learning/SIT. In 2012, CIL became independent as an American-Omani higher education institution. Arabic classes are held Sunday through Thursday. Classroom instruction will be supplemented by Omani Language partners who will help practice Arabic through conversation. In addition students will attend 4 hours per week of seminars and lectures on Omani and Arabic culture, history, art and society incorporated with visits to historical, cultural and relevant sites in Oman.

Students will also spend a weekend in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, June 16-18.
The program offers two options for students:
- Summer I: 4.5 weeks (May 19 - June 18) for 6 credits (Arrive on Friday May 19, finish classes on Thursday June 15, spend a weekend in Dubai and leave from Oman on Sunday June 18)
- Summer I & II: 9 weeks** (May 19 - July 20) for 9 credits (Arrive on Friday May 19 and leave on Thursday July 20 or Friday July 21)

** Program is spread over 9 weeks due to the Eid Al Fitr holiday period (end of Ramadan). 

Note that Ramadan 2017 will start approximately by May 27 and ends with Eid Holiday around June 26, 2017.


VT Arabic in Oman is a study abroad program tailored to your level of Arabic, starting from beginner II. 

Prerequisite: At least Elementary Arabic I. Students will be placed in the appropriate level based on their previous courses completed and/or placement tests.

Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. For exceptions contact faculty program leader .

Non-VT Students

Non-VT students are also welcome to apply to the program. To be eligible, you will need to apply to Virginia Tech for non-degree seeking status. Please refer to the admissions website for instructions on how to apply. There is an application fee of $60. In addition, be sure to confirm the transfer of credits and financial aid eligibility with your home institution. Please complete your application by February 3, 2017. Participants in the summer I program will earn 3 semester hours of Virginia Tech academic credit for the following course:
3 cr - ARBC 3954 (study abroad)

The additional credit hours will be transfer credits through University of North Georgia. Check with your academic adviser regarding your eligibility to transfer credits to Virginia Tech:
3 cr - Arabic language credits

Participants in the summer I & II program will earn 3 semester hours of Virginia Tech academic credit for the following course:
3 cr - ARBC 3954 (study abroad)

The additional credit hours will be transfer credits through University of North Georgia. Check with your academic adviser regarding your eligibility to transfer credits to Virginia Tech:
6 cr - Arabic language credits


Students will share furnished flats in new buildings located in Muscat, Oman's spectacular capital on a busy Souk/street close to campus.

Program Fee

Estimated program fee is $4437 for the 4.5 weeks program and $7959 for 9 weeks program, including accommodation, insurance, transportation house to CIL center, airport pickup, lunches at CIL, guided visits in Muscat, excursions in Oman, courses at CIL, cultural activities and events.
- Program cost does not include airfare, visa, VT tuition, personal and other expenses, Dubai Trip.
- The additional cost is approximately $3,056 for 4 weeks and $3,962 for 9 weeks, which is an estimate for the items: airfare, visa, additional and personal expenses and Dubai trip.
- Students pay only 3 credits for study abroad tuition for both programs.

Begin to apply for early admission and have all documents ready prior to October 13, 2016 at Global Education Office website.

Deadline for early admission: October 13, 2016
Application Deadline: February 3, 2017

Once accepted, you will need to pay a deposit fee of $300 by November 11, 2016 (please use VT Oman code CO43). Payment, for both programs, may be done in full by March 13, 2017 or split into 2 payments: First Payment: February 3, 2017 ($3,000 or $3,300) and Second and Final Payment: March 13, 2017.
