Additional Information

Virginia Tech course, VT faculty led, VT credit (6 cr.)

Gain critical thinking, intercultural as well as linguistic skills by exploring German language and culture. 
 

Schedule:

The program will spend approximately four weeks in Berlin, where students will take full advantage of the city’s cultural and leisure offerings.  Also, included will be day-trips and at least one weekend excursion to cities like Wittenberg, Dresden, Potsdam and Weimar.

You can expect a wide variety: from art galleries and theater to pop-up clubs in graffiti-lined streets, quirky shops, and extravagant Sunday brunches.

After the end of the language course in Berlin, the program will spend about a week traveling through Germany: primarily through Munich and the Bavarian Alps to the fairy-­tale castle Neuschwanstein  near the Bodensee (Lake Constance).

VT in Berlin

The purpose of this summer study abroad program is to jump start your German by giving you the opportunity to study the German language in Germany and to discover German culture on site.  But no less important is learning to Put Your German to Work for You!  During the summer, before we depart, and beyond, we will discuss further opportunities for you to use your German for work, leisure, and study.

Eligibility

No prerequisites; open to all majors. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Contact faculty program leader for exceptions.

Academics

6 Credits
Students may earn credit for:

German Language classes at the Goethe-Institut
Introduction to German Culture and Civilization
Independent Study Projects (Possible)

You will attend intensive language classes at the Goethe Institut in Berlin.  Classes will be held exclusively in German.   
You will also receive credit for GER 2724 – Introduction to German Culture and Civilization.  Together we will explore the broad array of German contemporary culture, art, architecture, music, literature, daily life, technology, and film.  This course is taught in English.
 
Those who wish to, may also get credit for GER 4974: Independent Study. Students will liaise with German faculty in Blacksburg to design and implement an independent study project while abroad.

Program Fee

Estimated program fee is $4750. 

This includes:
  • Housing

  • Transportation in Germany
  • Instructional fees and books
  • Entrance fees
  • travel health & evacuation insurance
The program fee does not include VT tuition, airfare, some meals, spending money, and any optional excursions. 

University Tuition & Fees
