Summer I, 2017 (May 26 - June 10)

International Perspectives on Communication

The program takes place during Summer I 2017, with two weeks of study abroad in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, plus completion of course work online. This program is designed for students who are unable to spend a whole semester abroad, but who are interested in the European experience.

The students spend two weeks surrounded by the Alps in beautiful Riva San Vitale Switzerland. Students live in a dormitory owned and maintained by Virginia Tech (Steger Center for International Scholarship) and earn credits from Virginia Tech faculty. The courses they take will fulfill requirements on their check sheets for Multimedia Journalism, Public Relations, or Communication Studies. Students who aren't majors in the Department of Communication can receive elective credits for participating in the program.

Most students spend time traveling in small groups to Italy, France, Spain or other countries before classes begin, immediately after classes, or during our 3 day weekends.

Bring a notebook, pencil, and camera.

Eligibility

Current rising sophomores and juniors; open to all majors. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2. Contact faculty program leader for exceptions.

Academics

Participants will earn 6 semester hours of Virginia Tech academic credit during the summer semester for the following courses:
 - Comm 4074: Organizational Communication
 - Comm 4244: Topics in Public Communication - Perception, Persuasion and Propaganda

In the spring semester of 2017, students will enroll in a 1-credit study abroad course which gives students an opportunity to prepare for the trip and to get to know their classmates. Students will know the region and make travel arrangements. This ensures that you won't be traveling with strangers.

Costs

Program Fee

The program fee is estimated to be $5000. This includes room and board in Switzerland, excursions, health insurance and books. Students will want to bring additional spending money. The program fee does not include Virginia Tech tuition.

Because this study abroad program is a bit shorter than most programs, it tends to be less expensive than many alternative options. Scholarships also are available, please check here.

University Tuition & Fees

Tuition and university fees are billed separately from the program fee according to University Bursar policy. See here for credit hour rates for the appropriate term: http://www.bursar.vt.edu/.

Housing

Students will live at VT’s Steger Center in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland.
