Summer I, 2017 (May 24 - June 27)

Virginia Tech in France

The program includes guided tours of Paris, excursions, and intensive language and culture study at the world-renowned Alliance française. The Alliance française is situated in one of the most picturesque parts of the city, within walking distance of Montparnasse, the famous Luxembourg Gardens, and the Latin Quarter. Courses will be held in the morning, leaving the afternoons free for discovering Paris and the surrounding region.
 

Eligibility

No prerequisites; open to all majors. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Contact faculty program leader for exceptions.


Academics

Participants will earn 6 Credits in French (beginner to advanced levels).

Receive credit for two of the following, depending on your level. May require supplemental work:
FR 1105 or 1106 Elementary French
FR 2105 or 2106 Intermediate French
FR 3105 or 3106 Advanced Grammar, Composition, Conversation
FR 3125, 3126 Oral Proficiency
FR 3205, 3206 French Culture and Civilization
FR 3304 Intro to French Literature
FR 3954 Study Abroad elective credit

Excursions

Your classroom extends into Paris and beyond. (Excursions subject to change.)

  • Three guided walking tours of an insider's Paris.

  • Giverny, the house and gardens of impressionist painter Claude Monet.

  • Chartres, charming market town with an impressive gothic cathedral.

  • Chambord, a Renaissance château in the Loire Valley, followed by a winery tour.


Housing

Students will share a room with another student from our Program in the FIAP Jean Monnet (a cross between a hotel and a dormitory) located in Paris (14th arrondissement).


Costs

Program Fee

The estimated program fee of $6,600 includes:

  • Room (shared)
  • Breakfast and another meal (lunch or dinner
  • Round-trip airfare from Washington Dulles Airport to Paris
  • Unlimited Paris metro pass
  • Courses at the Alliance française with students from all over the world
  • Guided visits of Paris
  • Excursions outside of Paris
  • Group dinner

The program fee does not include tuition and fees at Virginia Tech.

University Tuition & Fees

Tuition and university fees are billed separately from the program fee according to University Bursar policy.  See here for credit hour rates for the appropriate term: http://www.bursar.vt.edu/.


Application

Click “Apply Now” on this page to register with Global Education and electronically sign the required documents.

If you are accepted to the program, the FLL office will then establish an account at the Bursar for you. You will receive an email from the Bursar office, letting you know that you have to pay the program deposit of $3,300.

(a)Once your account has been billed, fill out a T-pay form and have it accompany your down payment. The check will need to be made out to the Treasurer of Virginia Tech. You can also pay online. If you pay online, make sure to call the Bursar office to let them know that the money you have deposited is for a Departmental Study Abroad Application Deposit.

(b)The second payment ($3300, due April 1) needs to be accompanied by the T-pay form as well.

Deadlines

The application deadline is Feb. 1th, 2017 (applications considered after the deadline - please inquire). A deposit will be due at the time of application.
